SHORTLY before 11am this morning, Thursday, Gloucestershire police were alerted to an unexploded hand grenade which had been found near the canal path off Dudbridge Road in Dudbridge.
The grenade appeared to be very old.
Officers put a cordon in place as a precaution.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were then informed of the discovery and have just carried out a controlled explosion to safely dispose of the grenade.
The sound of the explosion could be heard in the centre of Stroud.
It was not necessary to evacuate any buildings and no roads are currently closed.
The grenade was found by workers dredging the canal as part of the canal restoration project.
