THE Stroud District Road Safety Liaison Group would like to draw readers' attention to the latest scam on the roads.
Few motorists are apparently aware of Highway Code rule 110, which states that headlights may only be flashed to warn other drivers of one's presence, and NOT to be used to convey any other message.
Rule 111 advises drivers not to assume that flashing headlights are a signal to proceed.
In the light of this, motorists around the UK have been involved in collisions where a driver has flashed headlights and they have proceeded, believing that they were being given priority.
The resultant collision has left them with an insurance claim against themselves, in which the Highway Code has clearly shown them to be in the wrong.
If you want to let another vehicle into the road, simply stop and make eye contact.
The other driver should then make a decision based on his/her own assessment of safety.
In short, rather avoid flashing your own headlights, and ignore those of other drivers until you are sure it is safe to proceed.
