POLICE were called to Wallbridge after reports of a man calling for help near the canal on Monday night.
The police helicopter was used to search the area from 11.30pm until midnight.
Police said they received a phone call at 11.04pm from a man who said he could hear a male 'screaming for help' near the canal close to Kwik Fit, in Bath Road.
The noise stopped at 11.09pm.
A police spokesman said: "Officers checked the canal towpath towards The Bell Hotel and the police helicopter was used but there was no trace of anyone in the area."
Dozens of people took to Facebook to say they had seen the helicopter circling the area.
