SCHOOL governor Paul Stephens is joining Stonehouse Town Council after winning the first election for the council in more than 10 years.

Paul, who is currently chairman of the governors at Park Infant School and a governor at both Park Junior and Maidenhill schools, decided to run for the vacant councillor position in the town’s north ward as he felt like it was the next step forward for him.

"Being a school governor has meant that I have done a lot to help the children of the town and now I would like to help the rest of the community," said Paul, who has lived in Stonehouse for more than 20 years.

"A lot of stuff has been happening to improve the town in the past few years and I want to try and take Stonehouse forward in a positive way as this town has so much potential."

Paul, who has three children, 21-year-old twins Alastair and Penny and another daughter, Lydia, 15, is passionate about protecting the heritage of Stonehouse.

"It is really important to maintain as many of the community facilities in the town as possible," said Paul, a driving instructor.

"Not only are places like the community centre and the library an important part of the town’s history but the provide important facilities for the Stonehouse community.

"I am worried that if we keep reducing the amount of community facilities then Stonehouse will become a commuter town and loose its vibrant nature."

Paul beat his opponent, former town councillor, Trevor Baker, with 220 votes to 171 on Wednesday, August 21.

"I am really excited to get started and I can’t wait to work with other people who are very passionate about Stonehouse," said Paul.

"The town council has done some great things to help improve our town recently, especially the work on Oldends Lane to build a new youth building and skatepark, and I am looking forward to getting involved and helping the council to achieve even more great things for the town."
