ROAD safety campaigners are celebrating after 20mph signs were put up throughout Randwick, Whiteshill and Ruscombe - marking a successful end to their eight-year struggle for reduced speed limits.

Stroud district councillor Philip Booth, who represents the ward, expressed delight at the move and said the introduction of the new limit would make the streets safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Green Party councillor also voiced his hope that the ward-wide 20mph limit would be expanded to residential streets throughout the district in the near future.

"Reducing speeds has been repeatedly high on residents’ list of concerns. Over eight years we have had meetings, petitions, public consultation and more," he said.

"Thirty miles per hour is just too fast for the mix of narrow roads, parked cars and limited or non-existent footpaths, especially for children, dog walkers and cyclists.

"20mph is safer, reinforces positive aspects of our villages, reduces noise and has been shown to lead to more people feeling safer to walk and cycle."

Along with residents and parish councillors, who had backed the call for the 20mph limit, Cllr Booth also paid tribute to Green Party county councillor Sarah Lunnon and Conservative county councillor Tony Blackburn for their efforts in supporting the campaign.
