SIXTEEN firefighters tackled a blaze at the Elm Road Co-op store in Stonehouse in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday.

Fire crews were called to the scene just after 4am and spent three hours dealing with the incident.

Over 50 per cent of the building was damaged by the fire.

A spokesman for The Midcounties Co-operative said: "The store was closed at the time and we are happy to confirm that no one was hurt.

"We would like to thank the fire service for their quick response.

"The store will remain closed until we have been able to fully assess the damage and all 10 colleagues that work at the store will be relocated to other stores in the area."

The cause of the fire is not yet known and Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue are currently investigating the cause of the incident.
