SEN Professor Gour Chand Passed away peacefully at his Sydney home on 31 August 2023, aged 94. He was the loving husband of Brigid Mary (nee Wood) and caring father to Anita, Prasanta, Jane, Shuki and Rahul and to grandsons, Hugo and Oliver. He was born in Calcutta in 1928 to a life of privilege however, after his father's death when he was just 10, had to learn the true meaning of economy which stayed with him throughout his life. At Calcutta University, though a reluctant Economics student, he was a trophy-winning rower, ditching his 2nd year exams in favour of the Colombo regatta. In 1954 he changed tack and went to the UK to pursue a very successful career as a mining engineer initially in industry and subsequently in academia. In 1982 he left his teaching position at Wynstones School in Gloucestershire and moved to Australia, where he became Head of Department of Mining Engineering at the University of New South Wales. Gour was renowned for his determination against any odds, his keen intellect, his passion for rowing, interest in gardening and his dedication to organic food. He was also a keen walker and enjoyed his daily walk along the canal whenever he returned to Stroud. He will be hugely missed by his family and by a legion of grateful students.Your tribute has been received.
