GODSELL Edward Uriah "DG" HUSBAND, FARMER, BOSS and DAD Edward of Church Farm, Leonard Stanley, died peacefully at home on the 29th March 2017, aged 87. A much-respected farmer and boss, he is survived by his wife and business partner of 62 years, Audrey, sons, Rye, Harry, daughter Liz and nine grandchildren. He was born at Westrip Farm, Stroud, to Uriah and Nancy Godsell, where he nurtured his love of things both agricultural and mechanical. His entrepreneurial spirit developed during the war years, modelling toy aeroplanes to sell in Woolworths for six pence. On marrying in 1955 he moved to Church Farm. Always an early adopter of new technology, he developed a successful poultry egg business which flourished. News of Edward's progressive approach to farming spread both locally and further afield when in June 1961 he appeared on the BBC TV 'Farming' programme. Other TV farming appearances followed in the 1980's after he had divested from poultry to fully concentrate on dairy farming, setting up a second herd. This herd went on to win the Gloucestershire National Milk Records Best Herd competition in 1984. At this time, Edward's mechanical engineering prowess was acclaimed in the 'Power Farmer' national magazine, having built his own tip toe loading bucket. In his later years, Edward became a bridge Grand Master and recorded his memoirs in a self-published book 'Clogs to Clogs'. Edward's surviving family continue to farm in and around Stroud. The Funeral Service will be held at St Swithun's Church, Leonard Stanley, on Friday, 7th April at 11.00a.m. Wearing of a tie is optional. Edward always disliked this item of clothing. Memorial donations in Edward's name can be made to the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution at www.justgiving.com/rabi Family flowers only.
