WITH a history spanning more than 300 years, the Ragged Cot has seen its share of up and downs but its reputation for food has never been as strong as it is now.
Since Stuart Hanson took over the business in Hyde near Minchinhampton two years ago, the Cot has become a hybrid of traditional country inn and modern gastro pub.
My friend and I visited on a Saturday evening and, after taking in the views of the 600 acres of National Trust land around the Cot, we were just as impressed by the décor inside, which manages to be spacious and comfortable without losing the charm of an old fashioned inn.
After settling down at a corner table with a view of the picturesque gardens, we had the tough task of choosing from a varied menu which combines standard pub fare with gourmet touches.
In the end, I chose the pulled lamb burger with mint yoghurt and brie and a side of fries (£12.95), which was on the specials board and recommended by our attentive-but-not-pushy waiter, while my friend opted for the house beef burger with tomato chutney, back bacon, cheddar and a side of chips (also £12.95), from the regular menu.
Both meals were superb, with the lamb and beef succulent and enhanced by the garnishes, and the fries and chips crisp and delicious. The portions were perfect too, with the plate (or board) full but not so packed that finishing everything would have left us comatose for the night.
The desserts were just as good. I had the chocolate brownie with vanilla gelato (£6.95), while my friend went for the chef’s selection of ice creams, picking vanilla, chocolate and coconut (£5.50), and there were no complaints with the taste, presentation or portion size.
Neither of us are wine connoisseurs, so I went for a gin and tonic with Hendrick’s (£4.25) and he had a pint of the Ragged Cot Ale (£3.30), and we were both satisfied with our choices.
Altogether, dining at the Ragged Cot was a delight and comes highly recommended to anyone looking to eat at a traditional country inn with excellent food and service.
The Ragged Cot also has nine rooms for overnight stays, starting from £80 per night. For more, see theraggedcot.co.uk
