by Hester Miles, 9 The annual Oakridge School May Revels took place on Saturday 8 May on the village green.
Despite the cold, wet weather, a good number of people supported the event, organised by the Oakridge School Association, and valuable funds were raised for the school.
The theme for this year’s Revels was ‘Secret Garden’ and proceedings began with Key Stage 2 pupils singing several folk songs and performing traditional maypole dances.
The event was officially opened with the crowning of this year’s May Queen, Megan Ratcliffe, 11, and her lady-in-waiting, Maria Dickenson, 11.
The crowds enjoyed a wide range of stalls and games - plants, toys, lucky dip, cakes, coconut shy, ice-creams, books, face painting, bouncy castle, barbeque and a raffle with impressive prizes.
The green was decorated beautifully with a flower-bedecked swing and green man.
Morris dancers performed twice and the event closed with the now-customary tug-of-war competition, which was well-supported by both children and adults.
